New England's Next Earthquake:
The Writing On The Wall

New England EarthquakesNew England's Next Earthquake: The Writing on the Wall demonstrates just how devastating even a moderate earthquake can be in New England. It recounts the history of severe earthquakes in New England, examines the seismic hazards in the region, and includes inexpensive tips that people can take to make their homes more earthquake resistant.

"We don't think of New England as 'earthquake country' simply because the last earthquake was more than one generation ago..." says Dr. Klaus Hans Jacob, research scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York, "...the chances are probably 20% that within your lifetime you may see, somewhere in New England, a severe earthquake occurring." New England is also likely to suffer serious and widespread damage from a major earthquake due to our unique soils and the abundance of old, seismically unsafe buildings throughout the Northeast.
